Pray like you can
Have you ever been so frustrated and mad with God, that praying seems impossible?
I have certainly felt that way. In South Louisiana we have a well beloved priest by the name Fr. Champagne. He is VERY cajun with a rather thick accent, but man, he is Holy and so so bright. He is one of my favorite priests and I will go to any and every event he is at. So he wasn't surprised to see me at our Church's Advent mission just weeks after losing our son to SIDS. Before the mission, he told me to ask a question, when the time came. I mustered the strength to smile and told him "oh Father, you don't want to hear my questions" but he assured me he did. The entire night was focused on prayer. So many times I thought, "I don't want to be here. I don't want to pray" The mission part of the night ended and then he asked if anyone had any questions. He then sort of motioned at me with a head nod, and I thought okay fine! You aren't going to like this, but you asked for it! "Sure Father, I have a question. Tell me how to pray to a God that I am mad at. How do I pray when it's the very least thing I want to do?" He had the biggest smile on his face. It was exactly what he wanted to hear. ANd he then said words that have stuck with me to this day!!
"Pray like you can, not like you think you ought to" he went on to say, sometimes I'm so mad at God, I pray the rosary, but I don't pray the Our Father, I only want to talk to his momma!
God wants US, in our truest form. In our mad, in our hurt, in our joy, He wants all of us. Something that came to me in Mass one day, as I was faking it thought prayer, He already knows. God already knows, all of my emotions!! I'm going to just let him see it, the good and the bad. It drastically changed how my prayer looked!
God loves you, and HE so yearns to love all of you.
